Burning Down the House (June 3-6)
Kari sent me an email last week, inviting me to her & Max's housewarming party.
In Brisbane.
And I thought, "That's not exactly close, and that's not exactly a lot of notice to get a plane ticket."
I went back to work and let the idea simmer in my head. Kari knows me well. Just like my Dad "coaxed" Crash to come skiing in Whistler with us by sending a simple snow report, Kari wooed me with a last-minute web deal to fly to Brisbane.
It was too good to pass up.
Besides, who else from the States would be able to make it?
A few hours later, I had a plane ticket to Brisbane. And a few days after that, I had a glass of wine in my hand and was chatting with Kari & Max's new friends in Brisbane. We were up till 4am.
Good times with good friends, for 4 days. (Thanks for the hospitality, kids!)

Adventures in Shopping, Amy & Kari Style
Kari took me to the local recycling store one morning. She said, "Oh, I think you'll like this!" (She's sly, that Kari.) One step in the door and I was in love. If only I could take this all back to Sydney with me! The things for sale were an artist's dream... and perfect for any Burningman Project. RA & Q, you'd go crazy in this place. They sold:
Heaps of wire...

Bicycle parts...

Letters (great for the typographer in the family!):

...and body parts, cheap!

Moving on, we hit the more "frou-frou" stores. In other words, the stuff we couldn't afford.
Mod Oz Furniture:

Crazy Hats — not just for Americans anymore!

Waiting to cross the street, Kari & I saw this man. Why he was wearing only socks and carrying one shoe, we'll never know.

Bike-a-licious
On Sunday I went on a bike ride with Kari & Max via the riverfront (that's her second bike, by the way). We ended up at the Italian Festival, which was all about the food. (And the lines that lead up to it.)

On the way back we stopped at this little temple alongside the river. I went crazy with shutter exposures, and loved all the results.

Chillin' at Home
A little r&r in the "queenslandah":

I witnessed it in person: the long-awaited turning-on of the internets in Kari & Max's house! What a happy day!

Art-ful Dodgers
I work from home. Kari is currently exploring the field of "unemployed housewife." These fields are sometimes scarily alike. Since neither of us eat bon-bons (or watch television), the only thing left at the end of our very-short-attention-span-for-shopping is art. And, since canvasses are cheaper than most bad habits, a-painting we will go.

Max affectionately refers to these as my "flowers of death":

Last Supper
Out on the town for dinner in West End; my last night with Kari & Max. Delicious wine, delicious Indian food — all within wlaking distance of their house!

Remember the Gaydar Tower? Here it is at night:

And that was it. I said goodbye to Kari & Max. I'll see Kari again in a few weeks when she comes to Sydney, but as for Max... that's it for awhile, possible another year or so.
Ciao, Dr. Max!
